A Response to "Michael Goodwin on the loss of the freedom to fail"

"Without failure, we don't know what success is." To some extent, I agree with this statement by Michael Goodwin. One way to learn is through your own experience, whether it's your own successes or failures. However, two things are associated with your learning experience and can affect it substantially – 1) your environment and 2) the consequence(s) of failures.

Some environments are structured in failure. Intentional or unintentional, urban environments like Detroit, MI have an educational system that's not the greatest (for whatever reasons that aren't important for this essay). In this type of industrial city where you can gain an excellent middle-income lifestyle without education, the urge to "fix" this broken system may not have the most support. This creates a cycle of failure – failure to see the importance of education and knowledge. However, in America, we associate success with money, and if you can gain status without education, then many citizens have accomplished the "American Dream."

Children raised in this environment may fail and be surrounded by constant failure. The question becomes, do you want them to grow up in this environment and possibly follow, for example, a cyclic example related to lack of education? Listening to Michael Goodwin's talk on social promotion, the answer would be yes. However, I would ask the question, what if we take these children, graduate them, and put them into an environment of constant success? This "social promotion" would give them new insight and more examples of success. This is another way to learn – grow from the best and follow the successes of others. I feel this is an extremely important aspect of successful leadership and in many ways, can be the only way to survive and reach achievement. Therefore, I would not say you need to fail in order to know success.

I also think the consequences of failures are known to many and defined in America as drastic occurrences. Because of these perceived "penalties," there is a drive to not fail. I don't think this is negative. If you honestly know the effects of failure on your life and family, or you know that failure is detrimental, why would you want to experience it? That's not to say that experiencing it will not be substantial in growth, but I don’t need to experience the failure of not graduating from school or losing my job to know that they can both have a negative effect on my life. Knowing this, I will strive and do my best to prevent either occurrence.

I empathize with Michael Goodwin. We can create a culture where we have this "entitlement mania." People feel they can be bailed out of situations at anytime and it can feed laziness. However, many people "fear" failure or grow up in a structure of constant failure, and fight to never experience it. If you can become successful knowing what not to do through a thriving, nurturing environment, and never fail, please move forward and achieve!

The Hendrix Brothers links up with Will Seegars and The Hip Hop Game of Skillz to provide the music and produce the theme song for the game!

You know we had to make it more than an instrumental though. We needed the song to paint a picture of two things: 1) the game and 2) Hip Hop in today’s time. Thankfully, we were able to secure up-and-coming emcee legend BIZ the messenger who, along with unsigned rapper The SOP, spit the correct amount of knowledge to represent the game in it’s entirety!

If you're in Detroit before November 2nd, check out the film we scored. It's small (15min) and part of an larger project, but it's still a piece of history we were able to be apart of so we're definitely not complaining.

It was conceived and created by world renown artist - Senghor Reid - from Detroit. It's a still shot representation of the life and business of Woodward. Details on time and location are below.

Thanks to all for the support and patience this year! It's been a long road but we - The Hendrix Brothers - are almost there. We've scored a "documentary" and have three projects almost ready for release from our Camp - some instrumental concept albums and some Hip Hop/R&B/Soul albums too.

...Who Will Be The Hip-Hop Savior????

As a Lover of Hip Hop and a former "Hip-Hop-Head-Backpacker", I have to say a little something:

What I would like to see is a detailed report on all the "bad" Hip Hop ALBUMS with a clear analysis on all the songs. My only problem is the people that criticize Hip Hop either don't listen to a large variety of Hip Hop music or hear one song on the radio or see it on BET and mold their opinions based off that. Here's 3 Facts:

1) People fail to realize who actually controls the media outlets and who will only play and show what they want people to hear, see or what makes their company money.
2) At least 80% of Hip Hop is bought by Non-Blacks and most shows are filled with Non-Blacks. Therefore, they control what will be played and seen most of the time. Ask yourself why they want to see and hear certain lyrics and music so much....
3) The record companies will only want their artists to record what's commercial - if they don't, they are released from the label or the album is shelved...in other words, their salary and benefits are ceased.

I DON'T CONDONE NEGATIVE LYRICS - corporate america dictates what you will and won't do. When you make music a business and release it from being an artform, it's very existence..it's reason for being an artform is no longer on the table. The love for music becomes the love for money. And if the love for money is the true root of evil, then it will be hard for a large percentage of the business to move in a positive direction on a consistent basis.

This is nothing new...minstrel shows, Hollywood Stepin Fetchit days, 'Blaxploitation' era (coined by someone who wasn't Black)...we are focusing so much on the smallest issues and battles, that we miss the real issue and lose the WAR! Even more, we haven't even focused on who we need to protest because we turn on each other!

Holla at me when you listen to ONE Tribe Called Quest album or some BDP or if you REALLY listened to NWA's song "F**k the Police" or Ice Cube's "Death Certificate" album...I could go on and on...
